As both a dancer and a choreographer, Jerome Robbins seemed destined to become a major figure in the world of Classical Ballet. But when he persuaded his friend Leonard Bernstein to adapt a short ballet they had created called "Fancy Free" into a full-scale Broadway musical called ON THE TOWN), his true destiny became apparent. Robbins rapidly became the most exciting and innovative director-choreographer in the Broadway theatre, creating one unforgettable dance after another. "The Small House of Uncle Tom" in THE KING AND I, the rumble between the Sharks and the Jets in WEST SIDE STORY, "You've Got To Have a Gimmick" from GYPSY and the legendary bottle-dance from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF were all conceived and staged by one of the authentic geniuses of the American Musical Theater. His other musicals included HIGH BUTTON SHOES, CALL ME MADAM, PETER PAN, BELLS ARE RINGING and THE PAJAMA GAME.
