Dennis Church, an acclaimed street photographer, often identifies himself as a documentary photographer, yet his work transcends conventional boundaries, revealing a painterly eye for color, shape, and form. His new collection, Urban Color Fields, showcased at Palm Beach Atlantic University, features thirty selected works that highlight his unique perspective on urban life.

Church’s photography can be likened to a jazz ensemble, where each element contributes to a harmonious whole. Just as jazz musicians improvise and interact, creating a cohesive yet dynamic performance, Church’s photographs bring together disparate elements of the urban environment in a visually engaging manner. This analogy underscores the fluidity and spontaneity that characterize his work, making each photograph a unique expression of urban life.

Dennis Church’s work has received significant recognition in the field of street photography. His photographs are featured in the seminal book, Bystander: A History of Street Photography, authored by Colin Westerbeck and Joel Meyerowitz. This inclusion underscores the impact and relevance of Church’s work within the broader context of street photography history, highlighting his contributions to the genre alongside other notable photographers.

Curated by Hirbod Human, Production Manager at Florida Atlantic University, this exhibition is a testament to Dennis Church’s unique vision and exceptional talent. Join us at the Tauni De Lesseps Gallery of Art to experience the profound depth and complexity of Urban Color Fields.

The exhibition opens on August 12, there will be a FREE public reception and discussion on September 19 from 6 to 7:30 PM, where attendees can explore the unexpected meanings and connections in the Church’s work.
