Saturday at Depth of Identity and performance of Tama
Tama is a performance piece by artist Yacine Tilala Fall in collaboration with Elijah Rose Williamson. The Wolof tama is an hourglass-shaped talking drum from Senegal, made by the Wolof and Serer people. Its sound mimics human speech and it’s most often played by griots, West African storytellers and oral historians. Inspired by the form and functionality of the drum, this performance consists of a head form worn by two participants that will speak through touch. This work investigates the gesture of sound.
Influenced by Fall’s Senegalese and Mauritanian American heritage, Tama is indicative of the artist ‘s body of work that uses natural materials and the human form to investigate the concepts of heritage, ritual, and function.
Sunday, October 16, 2022 from 2 pm – 4 pm:
DVCAI Climate Change Event and performance of Parsing the Ocean Veil
Parsing the Ocean Veil is a performance linking ocean pollution to climate change. Created by artists Kim Yantis and Lucinda Linderman of Suiting-Up for the Future Arts Collective, with collaborating artist Dito Sudito, the project addresses the environmental issues and impacts of garbage gyres in the ocean. The artists present a pair of embodied Ocean characters, who navigate the exterior and interior of the gallery while transplanting plastic waste during their performance.
Suiting-Up for the Future Arts Collective artists Yantis and Linderman create demonstration pieces, allegorical wearable artworks, performances and workshops that have the ability to bridge the gap between the practice of scientists and the everyday habits of humans. Their practice centers around the rescue, transformation, and impact of industrial and post-consumer packaging, cloth, and plastics on our environment.
